Wednesday, November 26, 2008 - The counsellor of the SD@ Consortium, Prof. Dr. Melchiorre Fidelbo, takes part in the congress of the III Risk Management Forum  Arezzo in the session ’A path of safety and efficacy: the citizen Health Records at the centre of SSN‘ with a speech titled ‘From the Integrated Cancer Registry to the Oncologic Health Record’.

The SD@ Consortium, operational partner of the Integrated Cancer Registry Catania-Messina-Siracusa (RTI) in collaboration with the Azienda Universitaria Ospedaliera Vittorio Emanuele, Santo Bambino, Ferrarotto under the patronage of the Sicilian Regional Council for Health, participates at the 3rd Forum Risk Management in Health, related to the SWOncE ® software development, within the larger project of building an Electronic Medical Oncology Record.

The Forum is an open space to experiences of excellence, seeing the use of ICT solutions for the improvement and optimization of management and organizational processes and Healthcare service delivery.

The Region of Sicily, together with the Health Councillorship and the Vittorio Emanuele Hospital, present the developed project jointly with the SD@ Consortium, University of Catania Department G.F. Ingrassia and the Integrated Cancer Registry which led to the creation of a Software for the Hematology Department Management, including a module for

risk control in the administration of chemotherapeutic drugs.

The initiative is exclusively directed to best practices presented jointly by the party from whom the experience / project was implemented and by the ICT company, which provided the technology and know-how for the realization of the experience / project.

Experience and technology have been enhanced by calling those who implemented in their own reality the experience and who provided the necessary technology. The initiative object is to allow the presentation and deepening of the excellence experiences and ICT solutions used, for their possible implementation in other contexts. An experience that has yielded positive results can indeed be replicated in other situations or on a national health system level, avoiding further similar experiments and saving resources.

Tab of the Project:

Starting from the patient’s personal records, acquired from the Regional Card, it is possible to get his entire medical history  if he has been treated in a structure that has adopted SWOncE ® as outpatient management software.

One of the most critical issues to deal with, at the Haematology Unit of Ferrarotto, was to be able to provide a tool that can monitor the patient's medical history both from the chronological and the strictly clinical point of view. This issue was addressed by including the ability to view more data (eg. the chronology of visits, investigations, prescriptions, etc.).

Another critical point is to provide the right amounts and the correct directions for the preparation of chemotherapy medicines. The whole process is controlled both by algorithms, querying the database according to the inserted body mass index and by using a pharmaceutical protocol.

The system has also been equipped with the feature to extract the necessary data for the preparation of the T flow required by the region in order to monitor chemotherapy drugs. Moreover in order to control clinical risks there has been an implementation on tracking both chemotherapy medicines and patient through the use of adhesive labels for the firsts and identification bracelets for the seconds, so that it is possible to track on a terminal the patient’s medical course and its possible changes.

The staff members have highlighted a remarkable

improvement of the new organization concerning the work flow and the doctor’s office user flow.

It has been remarked the simplicity of the reports and the use of chemotherapy protocols, besides the safe administration.
